2012-06-26 - Great Britain

Around 100 people participated in the conference on ‘The Day of Azerbaijan’, arranged at Cambridge University by Odlar Yurdu with support from the Embassy of Azerbaijan in  the United Kingdom.

The main purpose of the conference was to make lecturers of the United Kingdom’s most prestigious university and scientists from various research centres familiar with the culture and history of Azerbaijan and the economic potential of our country. To this end, researchers from both Azerbaijan and well-known European higher education institutions were invited to speak at the event. Ilham Naghiyev, the chairman of Odlar Yurdu, observed that promotional activities dedicated to improving people’s awareness of Azerbaijan were held regularly in Europe and that future events was also planned, not only at Cambridge University, but at other universities and research centres throughout the United Kingdom. The chair further underlined that ‘We want to approach the promotion of Azerbaijan not in terms of advertising and PR, but in terms of research and science’.

Fakhraddin Gurbanov, the Azerbaijani Ambassador to the United Kingdom, speaking at the event, noted that it was necessary to provide information about our country to those studying at the university. This event will also serve as impetus for the distribution of accurate information about Azerbaijan to the whole world because the scientific conferences and lectures held at Cambridge University are compiled into books and are recommended reading for the students here.

Alongside scientists from European universities, representatives from the Ministry of Economic Development and the Oil Fund presented lectures on the reconstruction  of the Azerbaijani economy; an official from the Icherisheher (Inner City) Department described our national culture; and an expert from the Centre for Strategic Research presented a lecture on the features of Azerbaijan’s foreign policy. As part of the event a presentation was made on a new CD from mugham singer Raziya Sultanova.
